In the summer of 2002, Sharon and I took a flight out to southeast Asia to spend a couple days in Tokyo and Yokohama followed two weeks in Thailand, mostly north in Chiang Mai but some in Bangkok and a nice trip down to Koh Samet for a couple days.
Japan was only an overnight stay but, in usual form, we stoped at all the available Hard Rock Cafes during that time. Apart from that, it was busy and expensive. In Thailand we headed up to Chang Mai. We rented scooters and drove out into the mountains and visited an elephant camp, took a orchid farm tour and stoped for peanuts and beer at some random house in the hills... and purchased a teak wood bar at a marketplace. In Bangkok, we visited the usual tourist spots, the Grand Palace, the leaning Buddha, Wat Pho and others. We fell prey to the "taxi tour" scam. While we did buy a neckace at an inflated (US price, essentially) price we did get to see a neighborhood temple right in the center of the city away from the tourism. The last few days of the trip was spend relaxing on the beach on Koh Samet Island just watching the waves and drinking cocktails. |
